MODULATOR ESP

Modulator Experimental Synthesis Project (Modulator ESP) is Jez Creek from Nottingham in the UK. He performs improvised music that explores the boundaries of dark ambient, drone, Berlin School sequencing, and noise using modular synthesis, real-time sampling, sound manipulation, and live looping.

Modulator ESP has been described as "vintage synth overload to propel you into the outer reaches of the cosmos" and "one man will descend to (this) earth in a hail of analogue synth tones; called upon from the singular consciousness of John Carpenter and Vangelis - like a 2046 dystopian dream with the optimism of Jean Michael Jarre, and his penguins."

When Modulator ESP discovered that there was more to EM than TD, Jarre, Pickford, and Shreeve by finding bands like Arc, RMI, Redshift, Airsculpture, and Arcane, bands that were doing a more retro-styled improvisational take on EM, it came as a revelation to him. One of the reasons he'd left the band he was in was because he wanted to do something a bit more freeform. He knew he still wanted to play live but without playing along to pre-programmed, structured backing tracks.

Things started to snowball when he discovered certain synthesizers, both hardware and software, step sequencing, and delay processors. Modulator ESP loves playing synths because he loves the electronic, synthetic, other worldly nature of the sounds. This makes Ambient, Berlin School EM the best style for his interests.

There have been many iterations of this festival which started in 2004 at the Cheltenham Art Center in Cheltenham near Philadelphia. OZONE PLAYER
Photo

Click on the name, photo, or logo above to visit the artist's website.

Ozone Player is an electronic music project by the Finnish composer and musician Otso Pakarinen. He started as a guitar player in the early '70s but soon became interested in keyboards and especially the timbral possibilities of synthesizers. He played those instruments in bands, ranging from Progressive Rock to synth pop. In 1987, Otso started Visual Power, through which he produces music for TV, commercials, and documentaries. He also produces animation and other audio-visual productions.

Commissioned music for different purposes in diverse styles grew Otso's musical and technical vocabulary in the '90s. Towards the end of the decade, he decided to become his own client and commission from himself an album of music he would love to hear, using a new electronic music style he could call his own and keep developing further on subsequent releases. After years of exploration, the first Ozone Player album, "Insane Logic" was released in 2000 through Visual Power.

Otso has released more Ozone Player albums continuing with "Videozone" in 2001, a collection of soundtrack pieces. Released in 2002, "É" aimed for a more Rock style but still steered far away from the mainstream. "Frozen Paint on Boiling Canvas" was released three years later, softer and more melodic. The latest album is "Avara," the Finnish word for "spacious," released in 2022.

In addition to Ozone Player releases, Otso produces commissioned music and performs in several bands songs he has written. He also organizes Karelian Skies, electro-acoustic concerts held in his original hometown Nurmes in Eastern Finland. It is a spin-off of Different Skies, a week-long event in Arcosanti, Arizona, where Otso was a regular participant between 2003 and 2012. All collaborative activities provide fresh experiences and influences for new music, some of which will likely be released on future Ozone Player albums.
